Article Type configuration includes assigning each Article Type to a family. Family functionality is related to the workflow that moves a submission through the system. There are three Article Type families.
The Regular family applies to Article Types that are used by Authors or Editors to submit unsolicited manuscripts (e.g., original studies, case reports, editorials, etc.). Article Types in the Regular family appear in the drop-down list presented to Authors during the manuscript submission process.
The Proposal family is used when an Editor creates a Proposal to invite Authors to submit manuscripts on a particular topic or for a particular purpose, such as a special issue. Article Types in the Proposal family do not appear in the regular submission interface; they only appear when the Editor creates a Proposal and invites Authors. The Proposal serves as the "parent" submission for the invited submissions associated with it. For more information, see Configure Proposals.
The Conference Submission family is for any Article Type used for collecting submissions (abstracts, presentations, etc.) for conferences (annual meetings, live presentations, etc.). For more information, see Configurations for Conference Submissions.
Once an Article Type has been used for a submission, the family designation of that Article Type cannot be changed.
