Reviewers of a submission may be kept anonymous and referred to by number (e.g., Reviewer 1, Reviewer 2, etc.) for the life of a manuscript. Each Reviewer is referred to by number in Decision letters and in rebuttals to the Editor by the Author. As the submission goes through revisions, Reviewers retain their initial Reviewer identification numbers.
Anonymous Reviewer numbers are assigned either when a Reviewer agrees to the invitation (or is assigned) or when the Reviewer completes a (first) review for the manuscript.
Go to PolicyManager > General Policies > Set Reviewer Preferences. In the Reviewer Number Assignment section choose the timing for the assignment by selecting the radio button next to the preferred setting:
When finished, click Submit.
