Color-coded Editor Signposts

In the Editorial Manager workflow, submissions progress through the process of evaluation and publication based on document status. Submissions are placed in folders related to their current status and the type of action they require next. On the Editor Main Menu page, a user can see names of folders, most followed by a number indicating the number of submissions in that folder.

Publications can enable color-coded signposts to allow Editors to see at a glance which folders on the main menu contain submissions that require attention most urgently. The publication can define the time thresholds for each status to highlight submissions by priority:

The signpost for a folder may show multiple colors in the bar. In this case green appears on left, amber in the middle, and red on the right. Users can click on the bar to open a pop-up window that lists the number of submissions in each category. Clicking the link text for the number of submissions (on schedule, needs attention, or late) opens the folder filetered to display only those submissions.

Color-coding extends into the folders, where individual submissions are marked by color coding (green, amber, red) to the left of the Action links column.

Note: The shades of green/amber/red used were selected to enable differentiation by viewers with the most common forms of color-blindness.

TO CONFIGURE:

Go to RoleManager > Editor Role. Grant permissions to the applicable Editor roles:

To set threshold color coding, go to PolicyManager > General Policies > Configure Warning Thresholds.

These settings determine the color coding that appears on Editor menus and in Automated Editor Summary Reminders.

For each folder:

  1. Enter number of days to consider an item in need of attention (amber color code).
  2. Enter number of days to consider an item late (red color code).
  3. When finished, click Submit.

Note: Folders available for color coding are all Main Menu folders except for Submissions Requiring Additional Editor Invitations. This option is for use with the Suggest Editor feature. Color coding configured here applies only to Automated Editor Summary Reminders.
