Configure Contributor Roles

CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) is integrated into Editorial Manager so Corresponding Authors may select Contributor Roles and the Degrees of Contribution for themselves and Co-authors during the submission process. Each person contributing to a piece of research may be assigned one or more of the 14 roles included in the high-level taxonomy. For more information, see the CRediT page on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) website.

Editors may select or change Contributor Roles for Authors when editing a submission.

Co-authors can be asked to verify their contribution to a submission. The Co-author Verification email can include the set of Contributor Roles attributed to each Co-author by means of the merge field %AUTHOR_CONTRIBUTOR_ROLES%.

Note: Co-authors cannot edit their own Contributor Role information within EM. If there is confusion about a Co-author's Contributor Role and/or Degree, the individual must contact either the Corresponding Author or the publication.

The Author Details page (accessed from the main Details page for the submission) displays Contributor Roles data.

Contributor Roles (as well as Degrees of Contribution) can be configured to be displayed on the PDF cover page and the transmittal form (as well as when using the %TRANSMITTAL_FORM% merge field).

Requesting Contributor Role information is defined by Article Type.

To configure:

Configuring the Contributor Roles feature requires several steps: selecting the settings for how to collect the data, enabling Other Author Parameters, and setting the feature by Article Type.

To select settings for the Contributor Roles feature, go to PolicyManager > Submission Policies > Configure Contributor Roles.

  1. Select the taxonomy version from the drop-down list.
  2. Select additional data to be collected (if any). Check the box next to one or both options:
    • Collect Degrees of Contribution: This setting presents a drop-down list to the Author and/or Editor for each Contributor Role selected. Degrees of contribution are: Lead, Supporting, Equal.
    • Display Other field for free-text entry of a role name: This text field allows the Author and/or Editor to enter a role name not on the taxonomy list.
  3. Edit instructions. The default instructions appear in the text box. Edit these and/or add any custom instructions for the Author. (Displayed via Instructions link in the Add/Edit Author pop-up overlay in submission process.)
  4. When finished, click Submit.

To make Contributor Role settings available on the Add/Edit Author pop-up overlay in the submission process, go to PolicyManager > Submission Policies > Set Other Author Parameters. For the setting Set "Contributor Roles" Preference, choose Display from the drop-down list. For details about configurations on this page, see Configure "Other Author" Information Parameters.

Enable settings for Article Types. Go to PolicyManager > Submission Policies > Edit Article Types, and click the Edit link next to the applicable Article Type.

  1. On the Edit Article Type Page, go to the All Authors Parameters section.
  2. For the Contributor Roles setting, use the drop-down menu to choose either Optional or Required. (This setting only appears on the Add/Edit Article Type page after the configurations above have been made.)
  3. When finished, click Submit.

For detailed instructions on Article Types, see Configure Article Types.

Click the link to the Select Items to Display page, check the box next to the setting, All Authors and Contributing Roles (List including Corresponding Author). For detailed instructions on cover page layouts, see Customized PDF cover pages.
