A publication can define custom production status terms to provide specific information about a submission's progress through the production workflow.
There are four system-defined production status terms. They are:
These system production status terms are not editable and are not intended to give a detailed summary of progress through production. These terms appear in the Production Status field, which can be configured to display on Production Details and Editorial Details pages.
When a submission is identified as In Production, custom production status terms can provide more detail into the steps of the production process that have been completed, that are in progress, or that are pending. Users with Editor and Publisher roles with search permissions can use custom production status terms as search criteria to find submissions at a particular stage in the production process. This is useful for manual task assignment.

Custom production status terms also provide information for users who do not have permission to view the full production status grid. A submission's current custom production status term displays in the Production Status column in production tracking folders. Custom status terms may also be configured to appear in a submission's production history.
The current custom production status term will also appear on Production Details and Editorial Details pages after the system term In Production. For example: In Production: Ready for Copyediting.
Custom production status terms are applied to submissions based on rules configured by the system administrator. These rules work by checking any existing submission production tasks previously linked to the submission, if any, to see which tasks in the workflow have been started, completed, or are currently in progress.
Rule conditions follow this basic formula: Criterion + Is/Is not + Equal To + True/False. Combining condition statements defines the parameters of the status term.
The system checks for a change in a submission's custom production status whenever production is initiated or ended for a submission, or whenever a submission production task for that submission is assigned, submitted, or cancelled.
Custom status terms may be defined for use with Task Manager editorial tasks. The custom status will be applied to a submission if the associated tasks are assigned in the Task Manager workflow.
These status terms may be configured to be recorded in a submission's history. The custom status will appear in the Task Manager History section of the History page.

Defined terms appear in a list on the Configure Production Statuses page. The order the terms appear here is the same order in which they are displayed on submission-related pages. The order may be changed by entered the preferred numbered order in the boxes and clicking the Update Order button. Terms may be edited (click the Edit link). Terms may be removed (click the Remove link) if they have not been used. An existing term that has been used may be hidden (retired from use) by checking the Hide box on the Edit Production Status page.
