Editors Can Modify Existing Reviews

An Editor (with appropriate permission) can add to or edit a review that has already been completed. This can occur at any stage in the process following the Reviewer's submission of a recommendation.

Only an Editor can access the original review for editing. A Reviewer cannot amend or append comments to an existing review, as this would compromise the integrity of the submitted reviews. The Reviewer must send the new comments to the editorial office outside of the EM system. The Editor can then access the Reviewer's submitted review and make necessary modifications.

To modify an existing review:
  1. Click the submission's View Reviews and Comments link. This opens a pop-up window.
  2. Click the Reviewer's recommendation term hyperlink. This opens the review form submitted by the Reviewer.
  3. Click the Edit Reviewer Comments link that appears below the Reviewer name.
  4. Click OK in the warning overlay to confirm that this is the correct submission and that you want to edit the comments.
  5. Make edits as needed.
  6. When finished, click Save and Close.

Edited comments overwrite the original comments. Original comments are not preserved, and cannot be retrieved if the user accidentally changes or deletes information.

If the Editor decision has been made and the Author has already been notified, the amended comments cannot be included in the Decision letter to the Author. If the Author has not yet been notified, the amended comments can be included in the letter by copying and pasting them into the text field on the Submit Editor's Decision and Comments page or into the Decision letter.

Note:This feature is not intended to be used by Editors who wish to make changes to a review in preparation for the Decision letter. Editors should continue to edit the Reviewer Comments to Authors field on the Submit Editor's Decision and Comments page.
