Import Custom Questions and Responses

Custom Author submission questions and their responses can be imported directly into EM from an Author Portal (AP) or Manuscript Service Provider (MSP). Responses can be ingested only from the Corresponding Author, not from Co-authors.

Questions created on the AP or MSP side are configured with a unique metadata ID value. The publication must create those same questions in EM and assign an identical ID value. During the EM Ingest process, the AP/MSP matches the ID of each of its questions with that same ID in EM. This ensures all of the Corresponding Author's responses flow seamlessly from an AP/MSP into the submission record in EM.

TO CONFIGURE:

The publication's EM site must be configured in advance with the custom submission questions, questionnaires, and Article Type/questionnaire associations. Each question (parent, child, grandchild, etc.) whose response is expected to be ingested must have its own custom metadata ID.

Go to PolicyManager > Questionnaire Policies > Create Custom Questions.

On the Create Custom Questions page, click the Edit link next to the applicable question (or click the Add Question button to create a new question. On the Add/Edit Custom Question page:

Go to the Integration Options section and enter a Custom Metadata ID in the text box (if there currently isn't one associated) or use the Select Custom Metadata ID link to open a pop-up window and choose the ID.
For multi-part questions: Set the initial (parent) question as described in steps 1 and 2. Then go to the follow-up (child) question's section of the page (if necessary, click the + to expand the section). Enter a Custom Metadata ID in the text box (if there currently isn't one associated) or use the Select Custom Metadata ID link to open a pop-up window and choose the ID. (Repeat as necessary for additional follow-up (grandchild) question.)
When finished, click Save and Close.

Note: Corresponding question and metadata configurations (with identical custom metadata IDs) must be made by the AP/MSP. Publications are expected to communicate directly with the AP/MSP to provide the questionnaire information. This ensures that questions and responses submitted via the AP/MSP can be matched to questions in EM. The JATS XML must contain the custom metadata IDs, questions, and responses. Detailed EM Ingest instructions are available for AP/MSPs that are sending submissions to EM.
