A publication may request an abstract for the paper during the submission process. The Abstract field may be populated by the system, using the automatic metadata extraction, or the Author may enter the text into the field manually.
The text entered into the Abstract field by either method can be pulled into emails using the merge field, %ABSTRACT%. This field may be used in Reviewer invitation letters.
The abstract text may be configured to appear on PDF cover pages and on the submission's Details page.
A Secondary Abstract field allows an Author to submit the abstract in a language different from that entered into the Abstract field. This field is not populated automatically via metadata extraction. It can be configured to display on the Details page and on PDF cover pages. It can be pulled into emails using the merge field, %SECONDARY_ABSTRACT%.
To request an abstract (and secondary abstract) during submission, make the following configurations for each applicable Article Type. Go to PolicyManager > Submission Policies > Edit Article Types, and click the Edit link next to the applicable Article Type.
On the Edit Article Type Page, go to the Article Type Parameters section to set Abstract (and Secondary Abstract) preferences. Use the drop-down lists (for New and Revised Submissions) to choose either Optional or Required. When finished, click Submit. For detailed instructions on Article Types, see Configure Article Types.
Note: Changes to configuration of an existing Article Type are not applied retroactively. New configurations will not affect submissions in process. They will apply only to submissions initiated after the configuration change.
To include the abstract on the PDF cover page, go to PolicyManager > Submission Policies > Define PDF Cover Page Layouts. Click the Edit link next to the applicable layout. Click the link to the Select Items to Display page, check the box next to the setting, All Authors and Contributing Roles (List including Corresponding Author). For detailed instructions on cover page layouts, see Customized PDF cover pages.
To include the abstract on custom Details page layouts, go to PolicyManager > General Policies > Define Details Page Layouts. Click the Edit link next to the applicable layout.
