Submit Invited Manuscript

Some publications have a pre-submission phase, during which Authors are invited to submit manuscripts. The invitation may be to submit an article for a special issue, a symposium in print, or a Festschrift honoring a distinguished colleague (e.g., a retiring Editor from an eminent publication), or to write a commentary on another manuscript.

To solicit a commentary or request a submission, an Editor sends an invitation email to an Author or Authors. The email may contain clickable deep links to accept or decline the invitation.

Note: Two points about deep-link behavior that users should note. One: Because deep links appear in emails, the expected condition is that the user is not logged into the site when the link is clicked; the link will not work if the user is already logged in (or if another user is already logged into the site on the same computer). Two: Because most deep links are configured to expire, it is recommended that users not bookmark a page reached via a deep link. (The bookmark will capture the expiration information.)

Commentaries

When an Author receives an invitation, the email may contain deep links, enabling the Author to accept or to decline the invitation. Depending on publication configuration, the deep links may take the user to a landing page first to confirm that a human user has clicked the link (this feature shields the deep links from email security systems automatically clicking the link and accepting or declining without the recipient being aware).

Alternatively, the Author can log into the publication site and go to the My New Invitations folder on the Author Main Menu. Each requested commentary may display several Action links, including:

If the Author agrees to submit, the invitation moves to the Author's My Accepted Invitations folder. If an Author is assigned a commentary (rather than being invited), the request for commentary goes directly to the Author's My Accepted Invitations folder. An invited commentary in the My Accepted Invitations folder may display several Action links, including:

Once the Author has submitted the commentary, the submission moves to the Submissions Being Processed folder (like any other submission).

Other invited submissions

When an Author receives an invitation to submit a manuscript for a purpose other than a commentary (such as a special issue or a symposium in print), the email may contain deep links, enabling the Author to accept or to decline the invitation. Depending on publication configuration, the deep links may take the user to a landing page first to confirm that a human user has clicked the link (this feature shields the deep links from email security systems automatically clicking the link and accepting or declining without the recipient being aware).

The email may also contain a deep link to Submit Invited Manuscript. Using this link takes the Author directly to the submission interface (and accepts the invitation).  If an Author does not complete the submission at the time the link is used, the submission invitation moves to the Author's Incomplete Submissions folder.

Alternatively, the Author can log into the publication site and go to the My New Invitations folder on the Author Main Menu. Each invitation may display several Action links, including:

If the Author agrees to submit, the invitation moves to the Author's My Accepted Submissions folder. If an Author is assigned (rather than invited), the request for submission goes directly to the Author's My Accepted Invitations folder. An invitation for submission in the My Accepted Invitations folder may display several Action links, including:

Once the Author completes the submission, it moves to the Submissions Being Processed folder (like any other submission).

Note: An invited Author may add Other Authors to the submission, but the invited Author must remain as Corresponding Author.
