After a user logs in using the Author role, the system opens the Author Main Menu.
The standard Author Main Menu page includes three sections: New Submissions, Revisions, and Completed. The three sections contain links to related folders. Folders contain the Author's submissions at that particular stage of the editorial process.
Within folders each submission is listed separately with columns containing submission data. The Action column contains links to enable the Author to view submission-related information and act on the submission. Action links displayed depend on the submission's status in the editorial process and publication configuration. (Basic links are described below. Additional links are described in separate articles.)
Submit New Manuscript links to the submission interface. If the Author has any open assignments (revisions due, submission invitations, accepted invitations that are not yet submitted, incomplete submissions, or submissions sent back to Author), an overlay displays after this link is clicked listing any open assignments, so the Author does not submit a new manuscript in error.
Submissions Sent Back to Author are those that have been returned to the Author before an Editor is assigned, generally because the submission is not ready for processing (e.g., missing materials, incorrect format, etc.). Action links:
Incomplete Submissions have been started by the Author, but no PDF has been created, or there was an error building the PDF. Action links:
Submissions Waiting for Author's Approval have a PDF built, but the Author must View and Approve it before it can be submitted to the publication. Action links:
Submissions Being Processed have been submitted to the publication and are in the peer review process. Action links:
The Current Status column in this folder indicates the submission's status in the peer review process. Status terms vary by publication.
This folder may contain an Authorship column if submission Co-authors have been asked to register and verify their authorship. In this case, Co-authors will see the submission.
Submissions Needing Revision have received an editorial decision requesting revision and are waiting for the Author to submit the revised files.
Revisions Sent Back to Author have been returned to the Author before an Editor is assigned, generally because the submission is not ready for processing (e.g., missing materials, incorrect format, etc.).
Incomplete Submissions Being Revised have been started, but no PDF has been created, or there was an error building the PDF.
Revisions Waiting for Author's Approval have a PDF built, but the Author must View and Approve it before it can be submitted to the publication.
Revisions Being Processed have been submitted to the publication and are in the peer review process.
The Current Status column in this folder indicates the submission's status in the peer review process. Status terms vary by publication.

Declined Revisions are submissions that the Author has decided not to revise.
Submissions with a Decision have had a Decision and/or a Final Disposition (accepted on submission, accept, reject or withdrawn).
This folder may contain an Authorship column if submission Co-authors have been asked to register and verify their authorship. In this case, Co-authors will see the submission.
A publication may invite an Author to submit an article or a commentary on another submission. The Author is notified of an invitation to submit a manuscript via email. When the Author logs into the publication's site, the Author Main Menu includes an additional section.
My New Invitations holds solicitations for which the Author has not yet agreed or declined to submit a related article.
The invitation email may contain a deep link, enabling the Author to log into the publication's site and go directly to the My New Invitations folder.
My Accepted Invitations holds solicitations for which an Author has agreed to submit a related article. If an Author is assigned (rather than being invited) to submit, the request goes directly to the Author's My Accepted Invitations folder.
When the Author approves and submits the requested manuscript, the invitations/assignment moves out of this folder to the Author's Submissions Being Processed folder (like any other submission).
The Invited Submissions header and related folders only appear if the Author has been invited to submit. This section of the Author Main Menu disappears when the Author has no open invitations (related articles have been submitted, or Author has declined the invitations or has been uninvited).
For more information, see Submit Invited Manuscript.
When a publication decides not to publish a manuscript, it may suggest one or more publications that might accept the manuscript. In this case, the publication offers to transfer the submission files to the other publication. The Author is notified of the rejection and the suggestion for transfer via email. When the Author logs into the publication's site, the Author Main Menu includes an additional section.
Submission Transfers Waiting for Author's Approval are waiting for the Author to accept or decline a transfer offer from the publication.
Publications may ask an Author to perform production-related tasks. The Author may see two folders in the Production section of the menu and two additional folders in the Completed section, depending on publication configuration.
Submissions in Production lists all of the Author's submissions that are currently in production.
Current Task Assignments displays tasks assigned to the Author. (This folder will not appear if there are no assigned tasks.) Action links:
Depending on publication configuration, an Author may see tasks and related links displayed directly on the main menu page in place of a link to the Current Task Assignments folder.
Completed Production Task Assignments lists all the Author's completed production tasks. (This folder will not appear if there are no completed task assignments.) Action links may appear:
Submissions with Production Completed holds all of the user's submissions that have completed production.
For details on performing tasks, see Author Tasks.
Additional links may appear in the left column of the Author Main Menu page (depending on publication configuration).
Manuscript Services: This link opens a page listing names, descriptions, and website links of several independent organizations that provide manuscript support for Authors. The link may appear on the Author Main Menu, the login page, and in Author folders.
Alternate Contact Information: The Editorial Manager system allows users to add alternate contact information to their record. The purpose of this is to share contact information that may be used for an extended—but temporary—period of time (e.g., going on a sabbatical). This link opens a pop-up window where the user may enter the contact information, start and end dates for its use, and any additional notes. (This pop-up window may also be opened via the Alternate Contact Information button on the Update My Information page.)
Unavailable Dates: This link enables users to share dates for which they will be unavailable to undertake assignments. The link opens a pop-up window where the user may see any previously entered dates and add new dates. When adding dates, the user may enter state and end dates and reason for unavailability, as well as suggestions for people (names and email addresses) who might substitute for them. (This pop-up window may also be opened via the Unavailable Dates button on the Update My Information page.)
